Gail’s easy glass painting

by Gail on January 9, 2011

You will typically find me building something in the garage. However it’s been too cold to go outside, so I’ve been spending some time crafting indoors.  Did you know that DecoArt makes a great glossy paint for use on glass?

For this project you will need:

DecoArt (Americana) Gloss Enamel

Some type of glass ( I used a clear plate and a white plate)

Alcohol (to clean glass as recommended by DecoArt)

Stencils (I used a doily heart and a home made heart)

Spray adhesive (not necessary, but it helps to hold your stencil in place)

Paint brushes (I used a stencil brush and a makeup sponge)

Stamps or any other items you have around

I had a clear glass plate from a thrift store that I thought would be perfect for this project.

I used some alcohol to clean the bottom of the plate.

I sprayed my doily with a spray adhesive to adhere it to the plate.

I used American Gloss Enamels in Razzle Berry

DecoArt has over 35 colors to choose from!

I used a stencil brush to dab the paint over the holes in the doily.

Look how dainty it looks!

I added a few other Valentine items to show it off!

It was so much fun I decided to try another!

Whenever I need a quick home-made stencil I use full sheet label stickers. (peel and stick)

I traced a heart and cut out the center.

I rummaged around my teacher stuff. (I taught pre-k for 19 years so I have a lot of stuff in storage)

I found this cute little heart stamp.

I “inked” the stamp with the DecoArt Gloss Enamel Razzle Berry Paint and started stamping hearts in a random pattern.

I thought it needed something to fill in the blank spots so I used the end of a paint brush dipped in paint to add some dots around the edge to give “structure” to the heart and more dots wherever I felt I needed some more color.

I have a lot of little plastic trays leftover from my teaching gig. They come in handy for these craft projects.

Voila!  Cute pink heart on a white plate!

Again, added some red Valentine items.

Easy Peasy!  You CAN do this, really you can!

From the DecoArt site:

  • When painting on glass, allow first coat to dry thoroughly before applying additional coats to avoid lifting.
  • To use design patterns for transparent glass, position and secure pattern with tape on the inside or reverse side of glass item. Pattern lines may be seen easily through the glass so transferring is not necessary.
  • Wash tools and clean work area immediately after use.
  • Close lid tightly when not in use to prolong shelf life.
  • Allow to air cure for 21 days or allow painted project to dry 48 hours. Place in cold oven; set temperature at 325 degrees; bake 30 minutes; turn off oven and crack open door. Allow project to cool down before removing.      NOTE: Not for direct contact with food.
  • To remove dry paint from project before baking, glass items may be soaked in warm water to soften.
  • I think I’ll just let these air cure for 21 days.  I’m not sure the clear plate could be placed in the oven.  The clear plate can be used for food (because the paint is on the underneath side.)

I love painting on glass, and yes glass plates can go in the oven, I do it all the time and have never had a plate break because of the heat! Just make sure to let it cool before taking it out of the oven again!

I have put glass vases in the oven as well as wine glasses and wine bottles, as these are some of the glass items that I also paint a lot of!
