kimbo’s cupcake

by kimbowest on May 23, 2011

let’s make a cupcake…..

I got these styrofoam discs…

and I took some gorilla glue

and glued each layer together…
and placed a heavy book on top while it dried…
(fyi..I did two sets of these…)
for the top part…I started hacking into with a steak knife
made a ginormous mess.
and stabbed myself…awesome.
but when it was all said in done…it looked like this
it was super easy….promise…
the aftermath.
I also decided to carve out the inside to hide treats…which was an afterthought so it was hard to hack into the gorilla glue layers…
then I took this awesome stuff by decor art..
called magikote…could NOT tell you how to pronounce it…but I will tell you..it’s about the awesomest stuff you ever did see!
it basically takes styrofoam…and seals it off so it’s paintable.
and let me tell you..it’s addicting. LIKE ADDICTIN
and a little messy.
it takes awhile to dry …but i took it out on a hot spring day and it speeded up the process.
after the coats and the drying process is done…it’s time for paint…
I wanted to try both spray paint and regular tole paint to see how well it worked with the magikote…..
this is krylon cherry red…and this styrofoam ball is my cherry…..
you know. every cupcake needs a cherry…
then I painted the cupcake icing with decorarts baby pink
and the brown a burnt umber….(two coats….fyi)
I then decided that i needed some sprinkles…so I cut some strips of styrofoam
and literally dipped them in the magikote… (and layed them onto wax paper so they wouldn’t stick)
and then after they dried…..
sprayed them with some awesome krylon colors
I took a stick and stuck it through my cherry…I added a little gorilla glue to the bottom and pushed the stick through (to hold it into place while the glue set up!)
I added a “sprinkle” for the stem
then i took toothpicks…added a little gorilla glue and pushed all my little sprinkles on…
super…
when the glue was all dry….
fill ur up with treats!
now. I have to admit. this is addicting. I had some scrap pieces left over and so I added more gorilla glue and made a pear shape….
then instead of painting it…
I used some green tissue paper and some decoupage from americana….awesome crap.
the torn up tissue paper..
after it dried I added a stem the same way as the cherry.
I didn’t realize that I have other pear stuff..
maybe i have a thing for pears…
and just so you can see how big it is…
I have to say…it’s a bit addicting. I might have to add some more giant food to my kitchen!

This is just toooo cool. Love both the cupcake and the pear- love the idea of GIANT food!! I’m so glad to see the Magikote in action, it looks like styrofoam painting is going to be a lot easier from now on.

hmmmm…. This has me thinking about a giant toadstool mushroom for my 4 girls’ fairy garden… I have been wanting to make one, but the other idea was with wire and cement. Ummmm… HEAVY! This way I can add a bit to the base to make it heavier but not so heavy that I need 5 grown men to move it! :) Thanks for the inspiration!

Very adorable. Thank you for sharing, I didn’t know about the Magikote. I can’t wait to try it.

Who wouldn’t LOVE a mega cupcake? And the super-sized pear is adorable, too. Such fun ideas for STYROFOAM Brand Foam — thank you! I have a hint for your readers, if I may: carefully read the label on your spray paint can to be sure it’s safe for foam, and test the paint on a scrap of STYROFOAM Brand Foam. Some spray paints contain solvents which will eat into the foam. However, when you seal your foam first with a product like Magikote, you should be good to go with any paint. Thanks for letting me add my two-cents! Sharon, http://www.styrofoamcrafts.com.

So cute, Kimbo! I’m trying the Magikote today…keeping my fingers crossed for the same successful results! ;)

Sharon – I have “melted” my styrofoam using spray paint AND spray adhesive so using the Magikote is going to be a great solution to many more options!
