Cassie’s Coastal Blue Milk Paint Sideboard

by Cassie on August 2, 2011

Before I start, I want to preface by saying that this is one of my all time favorite furniture makeovers!  I am in love with Coastal Blue Milk Paint…. Gorgeous!!!!

I found this sideboard at my local Salvation Army for $39.99.  It is vintage, but had great modern lines, and Asian inspired hardware.

Aside from the piece of furniture I needed….

Sandpaper- 160 grit
General Finishes Milk Paint from Rockler
Purdy Paintbrush
0000 Steel Wool
Polycrylic Finish
3″ Wide Foam Brush

General Finishes EF Milk Paints

Since I found out the last time I used milk paint just how well it adhered, this time around, I only very lightly sanded the piece by hand before painting.  I gave it just two coats with my Purdy Brush, and the finish was smooth, dark and beautiful, as seen in this picture (where I was deciding whether or not to distress it!)

I decided to go ahead and distress it, by using sandpaper to rough up the edges.  I then used steel wool to smooth the piece all over.  It will look like the color is lightening, but have no fear as the finishing step will fix that.

Once it was distressed, I used a polycrylic finish, which I applied with a foam brush for the smoothest possible finish.  Here are two shots of it after as it was very hard to get a great picture of it outside since the color is a dark, almost navy blue.

I absolutely love this color and can’t wait to use it on something for my new house, which has yet to be chosen!  If you wish to follow my new adventure on my potential new home, come see me on my blog!

Another one of my favorites!! Such a deep color and the distressing is perfect.

Very pretty. I’m surprised how much the color darkened after you put the poly on. I really like the blue and am interested in experimenting with milk paint!
