Cassie’s Rustic Valentine’s Door Decor

by Cassie on January 11, 2012

Both of the exterior doors we use most on our new house have storm doors.  Storm doors are fabulous in helping energy efficiency, however, not so much aesthetically.  Our front door especially tends to squash wreaths a bit between it and the storm door.  But that is not going to stop me from decorating for holidays.  As if!

I decided to go with something more rustic, very affordable, and that would not get squished for Valentine’s day! With the help of my new woodburning tool from Rockler this project was super easy and exactly what I wanted.  Ok, so I should also give my husband credit because I could not have done this project without him either.  Well, I could have, but don’t let him know that!  We had a tree fall from the snow we had in October.  Of course I knew I could use some of that wood!  This past weekend I had my husband cut me some slices to use for Emmy’s birthday party, but I also thought it would be perfect for my door decor.  I selected a piece that was from my “test” pile meaning the slices were not as clean or even.  I sanded it a little, but the ridges from the chainsaw were still noticeable a bit.   Then I brought it inside to work with the woodburning tool.

I drew my design with a pencil, and then very slowly, followed my design with the woodburning tool after it had heated up.  The trick is to go nice and slowly and keep a steady hand.  It was actually very easy!!!  Here is my design….

I went with the heart and arrow design because Sawyer asked me yesterday how to draw it.  I am guessing that since Valentine’s day is getting close, the 6 yr old girls in his class are drawing them everywhere.  Well, hands off my son, ladies.  He’s taken!  Anyhow…. once the design was done, you can put a protective coating over it. I wanted to keep mine very raw and rustic, so I left as is. I added a D-ring to the back of the piece, and then I wove a piece of natural fiber ribbon through it and tied a double knotted bow.  Here is is hanging on my front door!

And let me just say I think woodburning tool is my favorite new toy! I can’t wait to use it for Emmy’s party decor (her party will be winter woodland, so it’s perfect!). I am off to see what else I can burn… MUAH HA HA!

I am a canoeing nut, I instruct canoe classes for Girl scouts and take them on trips, so one yeat I made canoe door hangers for my friends, I cut the canoes out of wood put holes in each corner, then I used the Dremel to put the word Welcome on it. I want to get a wood burner next. Love your ideas.
