This (faux) DRFITWOOD BEACH SIGN is so easy to make.
Here’s what I used:
- Some wood. I used a couple of pieces of scrap wood. (My pieces of wood were super hard–I would recommend something not hard–it makes the cutting process easier.)
- trim
- nails
- Canvas Corp hammer
- Gorilla Wood Glue
- Rockler Spring Clamps
- pencil
- saw
- Rockler Sanding Bug or sanding block
- DecoArt STUCCO
- wood popsickle stick or putty knife
- DecoArt paints (I used White and Lamp Black)
- Purdy paint brush
- Cutting Edge stencil brush
- DecoArt stencils
- 2 DISChangers
Directions:
I took 2 pieces of wood–the same width and glued them together but I glued them so they were sticking out the ends–off centered. I glued them together with Gorilla Glue and then clamped them together. I added a piece of scrap trim to the top and bottom. I added glue and a nail and used my little hammer from Canvas Corp and let the project dry for a couple of hours.
I drew out the shape I wanted the ends to be–so it looked like drift wood and cut it. I prefer electric power tools but you can use whatever you have on hand. I sanded the edges to remove any splitters sticking out.
I applied my DecoArt STUCCO all over the board. I wanted it to have uneven ridges. After the first coat dried completely I added another layer and let it dry. I applied the stucco to the top and the sides but left the back without any stucco for my hanging tool. If you wanted it to look like a solid piece of driftwood and weren’t planning on putting a hanging device on the back you would want to apply the stucco to the back as well.
I applied a couple coats of DecoArt paint. I did not want anything with a shiny finish. I used SNOW TITANIUM WHITE.
I grabbed my DecoArt stencils, my LAMP BLACK paint and my stencil brush. {I love this VARSITY stencil and need to get a second set-the “A” broke and I plan on using this many many times so I need another set.} I hope they make this stencil in an over-sized JUMBO stencil.
I added 2 of the 3″ Dischangers to the back of my driftwood. These are super easy to use. Just wet your finger and rub it over the glue to activate the glue. Let it set for about 5 minutes, then apply it to the back, making sure the hooks are in the area that you want your piece to hang. Let it dry over night.
I think it looks great with my SEA sign and my Pottery Barn knock off buoys.

Fantastic. I love it, but it definitely won’t go with the rest of my house. I’m really liking the new look of the site. It’s much more user friendly and looks so much tidier.
following you on linky and I hope you do too! via Claire justine oxox linky hop.
