Back in early September when I had injured my leg, I had a little more time to sit on the couch and peruse craigslist. While searching I found a local woman who had a few antique pieces of furniture. This little dresser was one of them….
My husband had picked it up for me since I was off my feet. Unfortunately the seller did not inform me that the bottom drawer was broken, and Chris did not think to check it or ask about it when he was there, so I ended up paying the full price and having to work with it. I decided to remove that drawer. I cut a shelf out of MDF and nailed it down. Once that was done, I sanded the body of the piece lightly, but kept the beautiful top as is. After lightly sanding it, I applied just one coat of General Finishes Tuscan Red which is a gorgeous rustic deep red.

Where I replaced the drawer with a shelf I did apply two coats since the MDF did not supply me with a beautiful grain below like the oak did. I distressed the piece all over, and then I waxed it with Liberon Black Bison clear wax from Rockler, which smells AMAZING! I love using this stuff! It gives a beautiful finish without a nasty smell!

Finally, I replaced the hardware, and voila!
I love the new look! It would be great as a nightstand or a perfect piece between two twin beds in a child’s room. It’s rustic and warm and now more useful, too.
